How do I know if my christmas pudding is cooked?

I'm steaming it (from raw ingredients)

Want to save it for christmas day so can't taste it!|||Stick a skewer into it and if it comes out clean its cooked.|||I usually just steam my for four hours and it comes out fine. You can test it with a toothpick but that's kind of a pain because you have to unseal it and reseal it if it's not done. You'll be steaming it again when it's time to eat it so that will help finish cooking it.

I'm just worried that you're only cooking it now. Pudding is a lot better if it's made way in advance. I usually make mine around Halloween but it's not unusual to make it a year in advance. You may be better off saving this pudding for next year.
