My extended family has always had a blah sort of holiday season. Well, now all the "kids" are grown up and we are wanting to start some fun, family traditions for future generations. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Love and Christmas,
The Wick family|||We open all family presents on Christmas eve. We don't get as many presents as when we were kids, so mom divys up the presents and then we go around one at a time and open one gift, then it is the next person's turn to open one gift, etc and keep taking turns until all the presents are opened. We do this so we can all enjoy what everyone gets (when we were kids though, we would all just open our presents together since obviously kids can't wait to do it one at a time. LOL). Then on Christmas morning, Santa still comes. And yes, we are all grown. But what's fun is we even sneak "santa" gifts out for my mom too. And it's a free-for-all. We all just rush out to the tree and find our gifts and open them. We each get about one or two. And we still get our stockings filled too. It's really fun. |||Well, there are some classics, like decorating the tree while listening to great Christmas music. I love Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums, also Boney-M Christmas. There are others, of course.
Deck the halls with boughs of holly.
Roll out some great Christmas movies, for Christmas eve and Christmas day. A Christmas Carol (classic), Scrooged (very funny) and The Polar Express (a bit strange, but good).
The Trans-Siberian Express has some Christmas albums and DVDs that look interesting. I have not seen them yet.
We always opened presents Christmas morning. For the small kids, read them The Night Before Christmas (I think that is what it is called) with illustrations. If you need decorations, buy some lovely ones that will be valued years from now. Have fun!
|||Every year growing up everyone in my family would buy one new ornament to add to the Christmas tree. It's fun to look back at the ornaments from the past year, as well as watching the tree grow bigger to be able to hold all the new ornaments.
The Grandkids will love having special ornaments at your house.|||The Christmas Turtle is a fantastic wacky and random tradition.
The tradition of The Christmas Turtle consists of hanging a turtle ornament (home-made from a toy turtle if you're really dedicated) on your Christmas tree as a symbol of the Christmas spirit of joy, love, and giving of yourself.
Why a turtle? If you celebrate the Christian Christmas, you are familiar with the story of the birth of Jesus, right down to the animals sharing the stable where Jesus was born.
It is important to recognize and remember the diversity in God's creation. The animals accompanying many nativity scenes are wonderful, but God created so many more wonderful creatures. Why not the turtle? The turtle serves not only as a symbol of all the good associated with Christmas, but also as a symbol of the beautiful diversity in God's creation, in our bodies and our minds and talents, and in all of nature.
If you celebrate secular Christmas, then do it just for the randomness of the fun!
Make The Christmas Turtle a tradition in your house this year, and please invite all your friends who may be interested.|||In my house we open a present christmas eve well the kids do and it is pajamas we go to bed and on christmas morning we have to wait for everyone to wake up and then we open our presents|||we all bring one serious gift and one funny gift (male for male and female for female) then exchange as people get what they want!
