I want to try something new this year by building a Christmas village display in my dining room. I plan on starting small then adding to it each year. Besides the buildings, trees, people etc what else will I need? What's the best thing to use for snow? What can I use for hills and roads? What's the best way to light the houses? Any other suggestions?? Sorry for all the questions! I thought this would be a great tradition to start in my family. Thought it would give the kids something to do each year. Thanks!|||My mother was a collector of these while I was growing up. It was pretty cool cuz every year we woud get to go to the store and pick a new house for the collection. The first year she bought 3 or 4 and a bunch of trees and peole to get it started then added 1 ever year after that or more depending on if she ever found them on sale.
For snow we used the fake fluffy kind that you can find in bags around christmas time .... the type you can put under your tree is what we used on the mantle. We did not have roads as it looked like one big wonderland but for hills we would use pieces of styrofoam that can be bought at craft stores and we cut it to fit our needs and then just piled the snow around it. You can buy houses that have lights in them already that will connect to others in the collection.
Dept 56 is nice .... but 1 house can cost you $70!
I suggest going to different stores like Lowe's, Dept Stores even Wal-Mart and see what different kinds they have that you will want to keep shopping for years down the road!
good luck!
** once your collection has grown a but a toy train will always give it extra pizazz! **
